Do you love your morning cup of coffee?
Well I’ve got some good news for you.
Several scientific studies have shown that drinking a daily cup of coffee could improve several key measures of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)!
Battling non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a long-term journey which can be won by changing small daily habits.
So drinking that energizing morning cup of joe may be a good habit to continue.
Coffee and Fatty Liver (NAFLD)
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common cause of liver disease in the world.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) is often referred to the “silent epidemic” due to the huge amounts of the population who have the disease but are unaware of it.
A scientific review found that increased caffeine intake is associated with a lower risk for NAFLD suggesting a potential protective effect on the liver (ref).
One scientific study has shown that those who drank coffee regularly had a 40 percent decrease in the risk of liver cancer.
Scientists believe the reduced risk of liver cancer is due to the protective properties coffee exhibits on the liver overall.
More studies have shown that liver cirrhosis has a 25% to 70% decreased risk of occurring in those who drank coffee.
And to top that – another study has shown that there is an inverse relationship between the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease (such as non-alcoholic fatty liver) and coffee consumption (ref).
So the more coffee you drink, the less your chances are of developing fatty liver disease and liver cancer!
Coffee tips for Fatty Liver (NAFLD)
1. Don’t load your coffee with sugar!
Excess sugar in the diet is one of the primary causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease! (ref)
By adding sugar – you are potentially harming your liver from repairing and undoing your hard work.
If you like your coffee, try adding one of the sweetners (below).
2. Add a sweetner (not sugar) if you like your coffee sweet
There are some good natural sweetners that appear to be much for your liver than sugar.
Stevia is a natural sweetner that comes from the plant Stevia rebaundiana.
The Stevia plant has been grown in south America for hundreds of years for sweetness and medicinal purposes.
Stevia is much sweeter (per gram) than sugar and therefore has much less calories.

3. Choose organic coffee
It’s important to choose organic coffee which is chemical and pesticide free.
You really don’t want to be ingesting any nasty chemicals while trying to repair your liver.
Your liver has a tough job as it is trying to keep your body healthy, so make its job easier by choosing organic coffee.
When choosing coffee, make sure the label states its organic.
